This was absolutely spectacular， just divine。 My second read of Chamberlain’s so I really shouldn’t have expected anything less than this。 This alternates from current day （2018） to the past （1940） and is set in North Carolina。 Current day， we begin with Morgan， who is currently serving a 3 year sentence for a crime she did not commit and believes her art career is either over or put on hold indefinitely。 But then she receives a visit from a stranger， and suddenly there is hope。 She gets an offer to restore an old post office mural in a small NC town in exchange for her release。 Obvi she accepts。 And afterwards， she realizes she may have bitten off more than she can chew。 She has never restored anything before， for one thing。 Flip to the past， 1940， said small town。 Anna Dale is the artist who won a national competition to paint the mural that Morgan is supposed to restore。 She also bites off more than she can chew， as back in 1940， the townsfolk were not as accepting and she walks into a scenario that is not quite what she expected。 As the two timelines work together， we learn more about each of these two women， but less is known about Anna。 No one will talk about what happened to her， or what happened to the mural， and the question of why Morgan was selected to restore it is just as much a mystery。 I had no expectations going into this one and it was a joy to read this way。 This is storytelling at its finest， and I was as enthralled in the restoration of this painting and the stories that were unveiled with it as was Morgan， and at times it felt like I was right there with her。 I highly recommend this one， and Chamberlain is quickly moving up my list as an auto-read author。 A huge thank you to NetGalley and St。 Martin’s Press for the e-galley to review。

My first read of 2021 and it did not disappoint。It’s about 25% longer than an average book， but I didn’t feel the length of it at all， it was a consistently great book throughout。 I wasn’t confused at any point between the back and forth between 1940 Anna and 2018 Morgan。 I was personally invested in the characters， and found myself rooting for them。The author does a great job of bringing the story together， down to the smallest details。 I absolutely loved the ending too。I’d classify this book a My first read of 2021 and it did not disappoint。It’s about 25% longer than an average book， but I didn’t feel the length of it at all， it was a consistently great book throughout。 I wasn’t confused at any point between the back and forth between 1940 Anna and 2018 Morgan。 I was personally invested in the characters， and found myself rooting for them。The author does a great job of bringing the story together， down to the smallest details。 I absolutely loved the ending too。I’d classify this book as historical fiction， with just the right amount of contemporary fiction and mystery on the side。A great look at sexism， racism， classism and how far each of these has come in 80 years。 。。。more

Anna wins a WPA contest to paint a post-office mural Edenton， Georgia in 1940。 Morgan is asked to restore it in 1918。 As Morgan cleans the work， she uncovers grizzly details， and wonders what led Anna to put them in。 Both characters are well developed， and the mystery keeps you reading。 Mostly， I enjoyed learning about how murals are painted and restored， and how challenging life was for young women artists pre-WWII。

Wow I loved this book！ I listened to it on audio and I couldn’t get enough of it！ The narration is wonderful。 This is a story about two women during two different time frames and how their lives unfold。 It flips back and forth from the 1940’s to present day。 A historical fiction book with a twist an art history。 High recommend！

This is a beautiful， well-written novel about two women， both artists。 They are separated in time by more than 75 years， but are connected through a mural - one painting it， the other restoring it。 The interweaving of their two stories was done beautifully and I found both stories tugging at my heart strings as the two women grappled with the choices and secrets that defined their lives， and wrestled with the significance of that painting。 Definitely worth the read。
